Orana Park Visit

Hi there

As a part of our term science focus on The Living World we will be visiting Orana Park on Tuesday the 5th of June. We will travel by bus, and will be spending most of the day there. We will be asking for parent help, and we are hoping for at least 4 parents per class to come along with us, to walk with small groups of children as we visit different areas of the park. The day will be organised for us by the educators at the zoo school, teaching to objectives selected by the rooms 1-4 teachers.

The cost for this trip, and the bus, is included in this term’s activity fee.

Watch your class blog for parent help details!

Kind regards

Carolyn

Monday’s explorer day!

Dear parents,

On Monday 21st May, the New Entrant team are holding an “explorers” day! This will be the stimulus for our new inquiry. We will be studying dinosaurs … but this is a surprise so please don’t tell the children!

You child needs to come to school dressed as an explorer – wearing old clothes because we will be getting dirty!

They also need to have a jacket or warm polar fleece, just in case.

During our inquiry into dinosaurs our main focus will be science, the living world. The key objective is that children will explain how we know that some living things from the past are now extinct (New Zealand Curriculum). In addition to this the children will take part in learning experiences relating to maths (classification), literacy (finding information and imaginative stories), the arts (dance, drama and visual arts), social sciences (working together in groups). Our key competency focus is ‘thinker’.

Kind regards,

Carolyn, Abi, Sara, Karrie and Amanda

When I Grow up …

This week we have been learning about different jobs in our community. As part of this we have had a few parents into speak to us about their jobs. We would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who have offered to come in, the children have really enjoyed it.

Dress Up Day

Next Thursday (5th April) we are having a ‘What I want to be when I grow up’ day. The children can come to school dressed as something or someone they want to be when they grow up. Please don’t feel that you need to go out and buy a costume, think outside the square and see what you can create from things at home.

As part of the dress up day we are going to have some activities related to different job.

The children will need to bring:

  • a box (a shoe box would be an ideal size)
  • Flowers, leaves, twigs, pebbles etc to share

Looking forward to seeing all the children sharing their dreams of who they want to be. I wonder what the teachers might dress up as …?

Week 8, Term 1

Hi!

We have had a fantastic couple of weeks, with exciting learning going on. Our caterpillars have all become butterflies, and thanks to the wonders of technology we have the hatching captured in time lapse photography. The children have experienced activities in reading, writing, maths and science associated with our caterpillars, all in a context that is both exciting and full of wonderment.

Last week we had a very successful Try-athlon, in which all children participated, and today sees us holding the competitive duathlon for those children who have wanted to enter.

After the Try-athlon we have a couple of helmets in the wrong homes. Here is a note from the year 2 team, who are missing a couple of helmets:

Bike helmet found- name is Tom B, grey/silver specialised, pick up from Room 12

Also, A red, white and black helmet was accidentally swapped during the try-athlon practices.  Someone has taken home one that looks just like theirs but it has the name Thomas on it and it is a child’s size and brand new.

Can you please check your child’s helmet and make sure they took the correct one home last week?

A couple of important issues have arisen over the past week, to which I need to bring your attention:

Carpark: The children are not allowed to walk through the staff car park at any time of day, whether they are supervised or not. This is particularly important before and after school. Please teach your child to walk through the pedestrian entrances to the school.

Arriving early: Teachers often have meetings with staff or parents, or preparation jobs to do, prior to 8:30 in the mornings.  We keep classrooms locked until 8:30 because we are not always around to supervise the children before this time. For this reason we ask that children are dropped at school between 8:30 and 8:50.

Tissues and sanitizer: With the cold and flu season fast approaching, we are keen to keep our classes as hygienic as possible for the children, to keep them as healthy and comfortable as we can. We are in desperate need of tissues in all of our classes, so if you are able to send a box to school that would be fantastic! If you would like your child to keep a wee bottle of hand sanitizer in their bag or tote tray that is absolutely fine  :)

We look forward to another couple of exciting weeks, filled with lots of learning :)

Kind regards

Carolyn.
